Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's strategic communications advisor. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough task as White House's strategic communications adviser. She's working with an administration that has the president as its own communication director. Schlapp, however, has never lost focus on her mission. She collaborates closely in conjunction with White House political affairs and committees on legislation along with policy shops as well as the larger communications team to coordinate the policy roll-out. In her current role she's focused on various issues including school safety as well as opioid abuse. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters much in her current role. However, she attracted a lot of media attention when her name was floated as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have an easy job as White House strategic communication adviser. Mercedes Schlapp is faced with an administration that is beset by numerous problems, such as the president's role as his own director of communications and Cabinet Secretaries who are involved in controversies of their own. Schlapp is able to remain focused and on task and work with White House teams in political matters, legislative affairs and policy, as well as the wider communications team. So far her main agenda has focused on issues like trade, school safety and the opioid epidemic. In her current position the director does not interact extensively with journalists. It was in March that she gained a sudden burst attention, when it became widely known that Schlapp was a potential candidate to take over Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. The battle has been bitter. Schlapp's ally Tony Sayegh and an opponent who is also named Tony started jousting with each other on the news. Schlapp called Sayegh after the Washington Examiner printed a bad report about him.
